The Cotswolds

One interesting place to view property styles is in the Cotswolds. The area includes parts of Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

Many of the buildings here are made of limestone sourced from the Jurassic limestone belt running from the Cotwolds. In everyday housing, limestone blocks are used, roughly worked and delivered direct from local quarries to give a natural effect to the buildings. Their rooves are often made of local stone slate. In more expensive buildings, the limestone has been more finely worked using Ashlar style masonry in large rectangular blocks, a style that became very popular in the 17th century.

Somerset

The type of limestone used in the west England varies across the region. The houses in Somerset are often made using a rich brown limestone. If you travel to towns and villages like Somerton or Blackdown Hills, you will see that many of the cottages are built using a soft blue Lias limestone.

Devon and Cornwall

Many of the traditional houses in Devon and Cornwall are made using ‘cob’. Cob is a traditional building material made from combining mud, straw and dung of all things. Thatch rooves are often placed on top of wide cob walls to give the pretty cottage effect that the region is famous for.

If masonry is to be used, slate and granite are the stones of choices. The stonework is then often covered with a light lime render.
